Athlete Management System: The Solution During Unprecedented Changes in Sports

Unprecedented Changes in Sports

Everything has been drastically different since COVID-19 began over one year ago. Schools, universities, and sports programs have had to regroup and reimagine the safety of their programs at every level. When the coronavirus pandemic first began, the majority of people didn’t think it would last so long. Granted, every country has handled things independently, and Australia is in a very different place than the United States. Over here, our progress has been minimal. Sports seasons which were originally canceled throughout the spring and summer were reborn this fall. Colleges have to utilize athlete management systems more than ever.

What is an Athlete Management System

This is example only.

An athlete management system is any system that collects, monitors, and analyses data from athletes in hopes to provide information that will allow athletes, coaches, or administrators to make data-driven decisions to maximize performance. In simpler terms, an athlete management system makes sure rules are being followed and operations are running smoothly. It sounds simple enough, but the role of this system is crucial to success in any sports program. There are athlete management systems in the smallest of sports programs and nationally acclaimed programs.

Examples of Athlete Management Systems at Different Levels

In the United States, one of the most prominent and well-known examples of athlete management systems is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The NCAA is a massive organization that has hundreds of roles from high school to collegiate sports. To participate in an NCAA sport, athletes and coaches must adhere to a specific set of rules.

NCAA Rules for Eligibility

The NCAA splits college sports into three levels: Division I, Division II, and Division III, also abbreviated as D1, D2, and D3. Of the three divisions, D1 is the most well-known, the most lucrative, and the most closely monitored. The NCAA is dedicated to serving as an athlete management system because they seek to protect athletes. Their regulations hold every athlete to the same expectation, keep competition fair, and prevent athletes from gaining any special treatment or unfair advantages. After the athlete is recruited and actively attending a university, they must continue to follow a set of guidelines by the NCAA. It’s a long list, but here are a few:

–       Amateurism: student-athletes may not be paid for their performance

–       Academics: student-athletes must enroll in a minimum number of credits and maintain a minimum GPA

–       Practice Hours: teams cannot exceed the maximum number of practice hours during the season

–       Gambling: athletes cannot bet money on any sport in which the NCAA conducts a collegiate competition

–       Banned Substances: performance-enhancing drugs and other substances are forbidden

If all the NCAA regulations are not followed perfectly, an athlete may be deemed ineligible to compete in their sport or hold an academic scholarship. The NCAA has had an easier time implementing COVID-19 guidelines because the players and coaches all must follow them to secure their eligibly. A 2021 example of this is the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament. Quarantining, frequent testing and safety protocols were put in place to secure a healthy and safe tournament. Teams who did not follow the guidelines were not invited to participate in the tournament this year.

Athlete Management System at the Australian Institute of Sport

Another example of an athlete management system is the Australian Institute of Sport. Similar to the NCAA, the institute is a force to be reckoned with. They manage athlete data to improve health and performance outcomes by:

  • Establishment of data tracking, analyzing, and reporting against sport-defined performance metrics for every high-performance athlete, squad, and team
  • Increase athlete availability for training and competition through the reduction of injury and illness while also understanding the adaptation to training and travel
  • Providing a nationally shared framework that captures performance-related data for all Australia’s categorized athletes in a single source

This allows any athlete to access their own data and have their team access relevant current information. This athlete management system focuses on capturing data from sources such as athlete entered questionnaires, wellbeing and monitoring tools, and custom applications. This allows for further communication and better decision-making for coaches, staff, and players.
