What Happens to Athletes After Their Sport Career?
Many students start participating in athletics at a very young age because of the developmental benefits that sports can provide. However, at one point or another in their athletic career, many athletes will retire from sports. Whether students retire from their respective sport after high school, after college, or after playing for a professional league, they are guaranteed to face struggles and obstacles.
Sports can take up a lot of time and require a lot of effort from athletes. So without that in their lives, some athletes can struggle to transition to a life without sports participation. Leaders of Evolution is one of the many online educators that provides athlete leadership courses and programs. Our many leadership courses for athletes of all ages focus on providing athletes with the skills and resources they need to succeed on and off the field. However, Athletes For Life is an organization that focuses on helping and supporting former athletes after their sports career has ended. They also provide online athlete leadership courses and programs but also work to educate them on the importance of continued exercise.
Athletes For Life
Based out of Sydney, Australia, their motto is “Athletes don’t need to die twice, they can be – Athletes For Life”. This organization organizes teams of former professional athletes of many sports and helps them train to participate in marathons or other physical challenges. All participants not only get back into a physical routine that is good for their body but also is mentally supported through these programs by connecting with fans and the community on social platforms.
Nick Youngquest is one of the most well-known athletes to participate in and benefit from Athletes For Life. He played rugby in the National Rugby League in Australia from 2003 to 2012. After playing for 7 teams over the course of 10 seasons, Youngquest decided to retire from professional rugby and start his career elsewhere. After retiring, he experienced a loss of purpose and a lack of confidence. Youngquest was second-guessing his skills and struggling to fit into the real world. Many athletes even struggle to find a job after leaving the sports industry.
Youngquest found Athletes For Life and has been involved in many organized races and marathons. He continues to run marathons and support local charities while doing so. He feels that now, his life has more of a purpose and feels thankful for the opportunity to improve the lives of others.
- Create pathways and support networks to help retiring athletes combat the challenges faced when transitioning away from sport and their athletic identity.
- Allow former athletes to reconnect with their athletic identity through training for, and participating in major marathons. Giving them an avenue to continue to develop and utilize their platforms in the community to live more active and fulfilled lives.
These missions and goals can be seen through their athlete leadership courses and programs provided throughout the year.
We also provide leadership courses for athletes and athletic administrators. We have created specific programs for a variety of ages and competition levels. However, Leaders of Evolution also offers fully customized athlete leadership courses and programs for organizations. This allows sports teams and other organizations to design their own course that will specifically align with their agenda and objectives.
Building your own leadership courses for athletes is as easy as 5 steps!
Step 1: Consult & Collaborate
In order to best help your organization achieve its goal, we are dedicated to understanding your needs and wishes. Through online surveys, focus groups, and in-person or online interviews, we will work with the organization to create a preliminary road map.
Step 2: Customize & Engage
Next, we will develop a plan from the information we gathered in Step 1. Taking the organization’s needs into consideration, this roadmap will be customized specifically to the partnership. Typically, we will create a 3-month curriculum design unless otherwise specified by the partnership.
Step 3: Design & Develop
Then, our IT team will create a fully-customized plan and make it available through our e-learning hub. Our plans range from in-person and online courses and can cover “on-field” or “off-field” topics.
Step 4: Deliver & Educate
Once the e-learning courses are specifically developed with the organization’s goals in mind, these courses will be released in units. Typically, the release of an organization’s courses will occur around 3-6 months after agreeing to a partnership with us.
Step 5: Observe & Adapt
Finally, Leaders of Evolution will also work to analyze how effective our strategies and courses have been for the organization. We value feedback from student-athletes, consider the course completion rate, and measure the time spent on the platform.
