Breaking Down Multiple Effective Communication Styles in Sports

While the physical activity of sports does not require communication, effective communication can result in a positive impact on performance and the outcome of sports.

Leaders of Evolution believes that communication at all levels is key to success in any sport. This includes communication between teammates, between a coach and players, and between coaches and other staff administrators. Here at Leaders of Evolution, we also believe that communication in sports is crucial. As a result, we have built our e-learning courses around building effective communication that can be used by high schools with sports programs

What is Effective Communication in Sports?

Communication in sports comes in many different forms and all are essential to success, especially team sports. For team sports such as soccer, football, field hockey, basketball and so many others, success is only possible if all members of the organization are on the same page. Teams must discuss strategy and all have the same goals in mind. Without the act of communication, a team will most likely not work in unison and not succeed. Depending on the situation at hand, a team may either use verbal or nonverbal communication: both are successful and have different purposes.

Verbal Communication

A majority of communication in sports can be considered verbal communication, where players and coaches use their words to convey a message. Verbal communication can be as simple as saying “pass the ball”, “take the shot” or “good job”! However, teams can also engage in deeper verbal communication such as discussing the next play, encouraging teammates or analyzing past plays.

Nonverbal Communication

When you think of communication in sports, most people picture a verbal discussion between individuals using words and sentences. However, there is communication in sports that take place without saying a single word. Players use their hands to direct other players or signal certain play callings. Also, positioning your body a certain way communicates to others what your next move is going to be on the field.

Receiving Communication

Listening and responding to communication is actually one of the most important parts of the communication process. Without someone to gather information, communication is useless. This includes listening to your teammates or coaches suggestions and improving your game based on the information you’ve received.

When considering what is effective communication in sports, it is important to remember that different sports use different amounts & types of communication. For example, a student involved in football will be using more verbal communication as they discuss the next play in every huddle. However, students participating in baseball or softball use more nonverbal communication, and less communication overall. Catchers and pitchers communicate via hand signals instead of using their voices.

Why Is It Important for High School Sports?

Communication in Sports | Leaders of Evolution

For students who go to high schools with sports programs and play a certain sport, effective communication is extremely important. At the high school level competition, students are not professional athletes, but they have most likely been participating in sports for a few years. This time period for high school athletes is an extremely important time as your skills will really start to develop.

Also, this is the time when many student-athletes need to decide if they want to continue their athletic career into college and possibly at the professional level. High schools with sports programs are the perfect place for student-athletes to prove their skills and practise effective communication in sports. With the help of Leaders of Evolution’s E-learning courses, students can better develop their effective communication skills.
