Goals for High School Students to Prepare for the Future
At Leaders of Evolution, we work to empower the young leaders of tomorrow, today, with our various e-learning programs and free toolkits. We understand that the goals for high school students and their teachers continue to shift with the future of the workforce, and have done the research necessary to build coursework that sustains those shifts.
Goals for high school students
In addition to goals for high school students, the demands of high school students’ education are changing due to the demands of evolving business and technological changes. Are the goals for high school students properly aligning with these demands? And how can Leaders of Evolutions’ e-learning programs help accomplish the goals for high school students to properly meet the demands of an unpredictable future?
Understanding what skills the future requires
Leaders of Evolution has been aware of these shifts and consistently updates our e-learning programs and goal setting worksheet for middle school and high school to better align with the research. These self-reflection tools, like the goal setting worksheet for middle school, allow students to find meaning behind their lessons.
So, what does the research say? The Economist’s report, sponsored by Google, discusses the findings when researching if the so-called 21st-century skills would be utilized in the everchanging education systems and future workforce. The Economist Intelligence Unit conducted several in-depth interviews with education experts and drew data from global surveys of senior business executives, teachers and students. Here’s what they found:
“Problem-solving, team work and communication are the skills that are currently most in-demand in the workplace.”
According to The Economist’s data, the executives surveyed list problem solving (50%), teamwork (35%) and communication (32%) as the top three skills that their companies need currently, and will need for growth in the future. At Leaders of Evolution, the need for these three skills in the future workforce is not a surprise, and we’ve made it a goal of ours and the goals for high school students to improve upon these three skillsets through our e-learning programs.
Outside of the workplace, creativity (58%) and digital literacy (57%) are considered important skills as future employees work to differentiate themselves from peers at the beginning of their careers and throughout. At Leaders of Evolution, we believe these are skill sets that can be worked on at a young age, which is where our free toolkit that includes a goal-setting worksheet for middle school, communication exercises and self-reflection worksheets are essential in creating well-rounded education for young leaders.
“Education systems are not providing enough of the skills that students and the workplace need.”
When The Economist interviewed top executives, only 34% said they are satisfied with the “level of attainment” of young employees entering their company. Additionally, 52% of these executives claim there is a “skills gap” that is having a negative impact on their organizations. Young employees agree, with 44% of 18-25 year-olds saying they believe their education system is truly providing them with the skills needed to enter the country’s workforce.
At Leaders of Evolution, we know that the goals for high school students and young employees are not being properly met through the traditional education system. Our e-learning programs are designed the help fill that “skills gap,” that so many employees, executives, and even educators know exist in the regular curriculum. Only 40% of teachers believe that businesses in their country are satisfied with the skillsets of entry-level employees.
The Economist believes that the problem may be that while there is a needed strict requirement on literacy and numeracy placed on the curriculum and educators, this creates a gap in a curriculum focused on problem-solving, team working and communication. At Leaders of Evolution, we call these three abilities the “essential skills,” or the necessary skills to succeed in the future workforce. It is a goal for high school students that go through our e-learning programs to build these essential skills in the classroom and outside as well.
“Some students are taking it into their own hands to make up for deficiencies within the education system.”
Despite many students and educators acknowledging this skill gap and the lack of preparation for future careers, many students are confident in their career prospects. The reason for this may be that in some countries, notably Asian countries, families turn to private-out-of-school tuition to acquire the needs for strict university entrance tests. Additionally, students will gather the necessary information themselves to make up for this gap.
Leaders of Evolution wants to guide students and educators into a curriculum that will better support goals for high school students. Our goal-setting worksheet for middle schoolers and other tools do not require a heavy tuition cost and provide mentorship and support, so students no longer feel the need to blindly take educational matters into their own hands.
“Technology is changing teaching, but education systems are keeping up with the transformation rather than leading it.”
Only 23% of the 18-25 year-olds interviewed believe their country’s education system is very effective at making full use of the technology readily available. This can largely affect new employees and make it more difficult to reach the goals for high school students aimed at preparing young leaders for their careers. Let’s discuss how Leaders of Evolution’s e-learning programs and free toolkit with guides like the goal-setting worksheet for middle school leads non-traditional education through advanced technology.
