What You Need To Know About the National Federation of High School Sports & Leaders of Evolution

Many student-athletes compete at the high school level for their respective sport. Whether this is the first opportunity to play a sport, their last opportunity, or a small step in continuing their athletic career to the intercollegiate level, high school sports are very important. It is also important that student-athletes abide by the rules and regulations of high school sports, which are created and governed by the National Federation of High School Sports

Leaders of Evolution is a partner of the National Federation of High School Sports and provides high school sports courses that enhance student-athletes’ understanding of leadership. As it is important for all high school student-athletes to understand the role and responsibilities of the National Federation of High School Sports, we have summarized the most important topics.

National Federation of High School Sports | Leaders of Evolution

National Federation of High School Sports

Also known as the NFHS, the National Federation of High School Sports is the national leader that writes rules for high school sports and advocates for the well-being and success of high school student-athletes. This organization is based in Indianapolis, Indiana but is a governing body for all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Each of the 51 member states has its own associations within the NFHS and work towards improving student-athletes’ experiences for each individual state.

The National Federation of High School Sports has benefited more than 12 million high school student-athletes and works with more than 19,500 high schools across the country. The primary goal of the NFHS is to write and edit rules for high school sports. On May 12, 2020, the National Federation of High School Sports announced their rule changes for the 2020-2021 Football season. One of these rules states that “following a legal kick when either team is awarded a new series, the play clock will be set to 25 seconds”. When decided to change or edit pre-existing rules for high school sports, the NFHS must take into consideration the safety of student-athletes and the equal opportunity for winning.

While the NFHS is primarily known for its role in shaping high school sports, the organization also helps promote students involved in fine and performing arts programs. The NFHS also believes that involvement and participation in theatre and art programs allow students to build essential skills. Therefore, the NFHS also defines budgets and participation for high school fine and performing arts programs.

National Federation of High School Sports Learning Center

Like Leaders of Evolution, the National Federation of High School Sports is also dedicated to the promotion of amateur sports at the high school level. However, this does not mean that student-athletes can not be leaders and make a big impact on the outcome of the game. The NFHS also offers online education courses that can benefit high school student-athletes, coaches, officials, parents, and speech and music leaders through the NFHS Learning Center.

The NFHS Learning Center provides over 35 free high school sports courses for a variety of audiences in sport. Each high school sports courses cover a unique topic related to sports and current events. The newest course offered by the National Federation of High School Sports is “COVID-19 for Coaches and Administrators” which discusses the challenges and solutions of administering sports during a global pandemic

Other featured high school sports courses designed by the National Federation of High School Sports Learning Center include “Protecting Students from Abuse”, “Fundamentals of Coaching”, “First Aid”, and “Concussion Courses”. Leaders of Evolution encourages student-athletes, coaches, officials, and parents to check out the high school sports courses by the NFHS.

Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association

Within the National Federation of High School Sports, each of the 51 states and territories (including Washington D.C.) have their own association. For student-athletes such as myself who are from Pennsylvania, our high school sports programs are governed by both the NFHS and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, or the PIAA.

The PIAA began in Pittsburgh in 1913 and later moved to the capital of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. The PIAA is responsible for regulating interscholastic athletic programs for all levels from intermediate school to high school. However, not all public schools are required to be under the jurisdiction of the PIAA. For example, until 2004, public schools in Philadelphia did not identify as a participant in the PIAA.

Each state association is then divided further into which county high schools fall into. As a student-athlete in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, my high school sports programs were also overseen by District 3. As a former high school student-athlete in Pennsylvania, I had the first-hand experience of how both the PIAA and the NFHS made high school sports safer and fair for all teams.
