Making the Most of the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Development Workshops

At Leaders of Evolution, we strive to inspire the highest type of leadership and create programs and classes that help develop these important life skills. The NCAA has also implemented similar academy seminars that help athletic administrators build these same skills.

By understanding these NCAA programs and taking courses that partner with Leaders of Evolution, you can also understand these skills and use them to become a better leader.

The first step in educating student-athletes about leadership development is educating the NCAA staff and administrators of said intercollegiate programs. The NCAA has created the Leadership Academy Workshop, which entails two in-person meetings that inform coaches and staff of the principles that lead to leadership skills. At the NCAA academy seminar, members discuss many topics, including the implementation of these programs at their own campus, the methods to evaluate said programs, and the emphasis on effective communication.

After the two sessions, members will walk away as educated individuals and be ready to take the strategies they have learned back to their respective intercollegiate programs. Any NCAA athletic administrator is welcome to apply and encouraged to attend the NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop.

The application for this academy workshop can be found by visiting the NCAA Program Hub. Before participating in the NCAA academy seminar, applicants must also submit a letter of recommendation to express their interest and determination in building skills for student-athletes.

How can Leaders of Evolution help?

There are resources other than the academy program for student-athletes and athletic departments that are not directly created by the NCAA. Here at Leaders of Evolution, we also want to provide the resources and information needed to develop the necessary leadership skills. Therefore, we give organizations the opportunity to develop an e-learning partnership with us called our Leadership Development seminar.

By partnering with Leaders of Evolution, athletes and intercollegiate programs can use our courses and seminars to develop these important skills. Taking the following steps can ensure that Leaders of Evolution will improve your organization’s overall leadership and teamwork.

Step 1: Consult & Collaborate

In order to best help your organization achieve its goal, Leaders of Evolution is dedicated to understanding your needs and wishes. Through online surveys, focus groups, and in-person or online interviews, we will work with the organization to create a preliminary road map.

This road map outlines the best possible routes to success and can be created through a virtual brainstorming session.

Step 2: Customize & Engage

Next, Leaders of Evolution will develop a plan from the information we gathered in Step 1. Taking the organization’s needs into consideration, this roadmap will be customized specifically to the partnership. Typically, Leaders of Evolution will create a 3-month curriculum design unless otherwise specified by the partnership.

Step 3: Design & Develop

Then, the Leaders of Evolution IT team will create a fully-customized plan and make it available through our E-learning hub. Our plans range from in-person and online courses, and can cover “on-field” or “off-field” topics.

Leaders of Evolution aims to provide a collaborative approach to learning for all who want to educate themselves on these important skills.

Step 4: Deliver & Educate

Once the E-learning courses are specifically developed with the organization’s goals in mind, these courses will be released in units. Typically, the release of an organization’s courses will occur around 3-6 months after agreeing to a partnership with Leaders of Evolution. From there, the organization can give access to all members whether this be athletes, coaches, or other staff members.

Step 5: Observe & Adapt

Finally, Leaders of Evolution will also work to analyze how effective our strategies and courses have been for the organization. We value feedback from student-athletes, consider the course completion rate, and measure the time spent on the platform. Even if the partnership with Leaders of Evolution is no longer ongoing, we are determined to help create strategies for the company to implement years down the road.

Who benefits from these courses?

NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Development Workshop | Leaders of Evolution

Student-athletes are the primary audience for the NCAA Leadership Development Workshop. As the heart and soul of athletic programs, student-athletes can learn a lot from these development programs.

Through Leaders of Evolution courses, students can learn the skills necessary to become an NCAA leader both on and off the field. These life skills can be translated into so many aspects of life, not just in relation to sports. Our hope at Leaders of Evolution is to begin to develop these skills and inspire the NCAA student-athletes to continue their education even after they graduate from college.

While the primary target audience for these NCAA Leadership Development seminars is student-athletes, other NCAA members such as coaches and staff can also benefit from these programs. Many organizations that Leaders of Evolution partner with our intercollegiate teams. Therefore, it is most likely the coaching staff that reaches out to start a partnership with Leaders of Evolution.

Also, the NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop was created specifically for coaches and other athletic administrators. Once these members have attended the academy seminar and have the knowledge of leadership, they can then implement a program on their campus.

The 4 C’s of Learning by Leaders of Evolution

The learning curriculum of the classes presented by Leaders of Evolution is designed based on the principles of the 4 C’s: competence, confidence, character, and connectedness. All 4 of these C’s must be present in order to be a successful learner and do well in the Leadership Development Workshops.

Competence

All student-athletes must have the competence, or the skills needed to be effective in a role, in order to learn helpful information from these workshops. Becoming a successful leader takes time and dedication to understand the material.

Confidence

In order to successfully take in information and learn the material presented, students must have the confidence in their own ability. They also must have confidence in their ability to inspire that same spirit in others.

Character

Throughout these courses, understanding your character and having self-awareness is important to learn from your mistakes. Empathy and integrity are extremely central to one’s character development.

Connectedness

Especially when learning to become a leader, student-athletes must focus on connecting and cooperating with their peers, teammates, or colleagues. Having positive relationships with each of these members is key to becoming a leader.

Workshop for San Francisco State University

Some programs through Leaders of Evolution include in-person sessions and presentations about Leadership Development. These programs have been proven to benefit athletic programs, and many universities continue to partner with Leaders of Evolution year after year. For the past few years, the San Francisco State University Men’s Basketball has partnered with Leaders of Evolution and participated in in-person learning sessions.

In 2018, Co-founder of Leaders of Evolution, Jon Shepherd, worked with Gators Head Coach, Vince Inglima, to design a presentation about leadership development for student-athletes. Many players from the team have spoken out about their experience with Leaders of Evolution and feel that their leadership skills have enhanced greatly as a result.
