Get the Best Practises of the 7 NESA Teaching Standards

While teachers might be leading the classroom, that doesn’t mean they still aren’t still learning!

Whether physically in the classroom, or virtually online, the teacher plays an extremely important role in education. A good teacher can educate students in any and all environments, including during a global pandemic. But before becoming a teacher, they must act as students, learning the important skills and qualifications of their career path.

However, even after formal education ends, the learning process is continuous. One organisation dedicated to the ongoing education of teachers is the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and its NESA Teaching Standards program. The NESA works to provide resources for teachers and students of all age levels.

NESA Teaching Standards

Known formally as the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, the NESA Teaching Standards program is a resource that works to ensure high-quality, professional, and effective teaching practices. In other words, the NESA Teaching Standards program describes what teachers should know and what they should be able to do in and out of classrooms. Used across the nation, the NESA Teaching Standards guide teachers’ preparation, support, and development throughout their careers.

In order to put these standards into specific words, the NESA and NSW Teacher Accreditation system has created a list of 7 NESA Teaching Standards. The following seven standards are written, persued, and governed by the NSE Education Standards Authority and cover the three teaching domains: professional knowledge (1 and 2), professional practice (3, 4, and 5), and professional engagement (6 and 7).

The 7 NESA Teaching Standards

  1. Know students and how they learn.
  1. Know the content and how to teach it.
  1. Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning.
  1. Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments.
  1. Assess, provide feedback, and report on student learning.
  1. Engage in professional learning.
  1. Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community.

In addition, each standard has a set of standard descriptors for each stage of a teacher’s career. These stages include graduate teacher, proficient teacher, highly accomplished teacher, and lead teacher. By following these standards, teachers can begin to improve the lives of young Australians. Because NESA is dedicated to aiding in all aspect of education, they also have created NESA Schools Online and NESA Students Online, which give resources for school principals and students, respectively.
