Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum – A Valuable Resource for Students

I am not a math person. Biology and chemistry were never really my thing either. I always dreaded my STEM classes and rarely had any motivation to work hard. Even so, I had no choice but to take twelve whole years of a subject I had absolutely no interest in. Now, as a junior in college. I can happily say I have not taken a math or science class since my senior year of high school. Lucky me…right?

Now I get to take classes that I’ve spent my whole life yearning to engage in. As a Communications major, social and emotional learning plays a big part in my curriculum. I’ve taken a bunch of courses from ‘Interpersonal Communication’ to ‘Small Group Communication’ that all teach the importance of these life skills. Without a doubt, these have some of the most enjoyable classes that I have ever taken—K-12 included.

While I can acknowledge how fortunate I am to finally be taking classes that I love and feel passionate about, I still wish I had been given the opportunity to engage in courses that follow a social and emotional learning curriculum much earlier on in life. This curriculum allows for all students to grow as individuals, regardless of their particular interests in school.

Our 4 C’s Learning Framework

Leaders of Evolution believe that our 4 C’s Learning Framework is an essential part of our social and learning curriculum. Our courses are designed to enhance each and every student’s competence, confidence, character, & connectedness which brings out the best version of themselves. So, what do these traits really mean?

Competence

Our team at Leaders of Evolution believes that competence relates to the skills the learner is developing whether they be technical (what) or tactical (how) and is intrinsically linked to performance outcomes. With competence, students feel prepared to tackle any situation, big or small.

Confidence

We believe this trait deals with the development of positive self-worth and recognition that the learner can use the knowledge gained to influence themselves and others. Confidence allows students to approach challenges with ease as they know they will either come out successful or prepared to learn from their mistakes.

Character

Leaders of Evolution defines character as relating to how the learner develops a sense of self-awareness and behaviours such as empathy, integrity and responsibility within the communities they apply their learning. Having a positive character means that you are more than capable of being a good friend, helpful co-worker, and a strong leader.

Connectedness

Connectedness relates to how the learner is able to establish and foster positive working relationships within the environments they apply their learning. This trait is a powerful tool in any given workforce as it is heavily connected to strong interpersonal communication skills.
