[From experience] Why Students’ Mental Health Matters
Student mental health is a topic that is way too overlooked in terms of a school setting. In education, we are taught that our brain plays the most important role.
By the time I had graduated from kindergarten, I knew that my brain was what allowed me to learn. I can picture it now–a big poster featuring a cartoon brain with the words “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER” surrounding. All of this talk about how powerful our minds are, but never any talk about its imperfections.
It wasn’t until my first year in college that I had actually learned about the functions of each part of our brain. Things like dopamine and serotonin were never taught in biology or chemistry, even though the imbalance of these chemicals were greatly affecting my own biology. It’s time we start normalising our brain’s imperfections and discussing the importance of student mental health.
Being in an ongoing battle with mental health myself, I know that I would have benefited greatly from the implementation of a Mental Health Program in grade school. I will never forget how lonely I felt after being diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder and depression at the age of 12. I had no idea how normal these malfunctions were and that many of my peers were facing a very similar battle with mental health.
It took years before I had felt comfortable talking about my anxiety, even to my closest friends. If only I had known better ways to cope with my struggles, or even had advice on asking for help.
Student Mental Health
Thankfully, there are now ways to implement a curriculum focused on the importance of student mental health. At Leaders of Evolution, we know that student mental health matters! Without properly caring for our minds, they cannot work to the best of their abilities. That is why we have created a Mental Health Program that emphasises the importance of self-love in terms of success.
Each of our courses follows The 4 C’s Learning Framework and gives insight on what it means to be an effective leader. Our team at Leaders of Evolution believes that the 4 C’s transition smoothly across all of the learning we design and ultimately we want learners walking away with their Competence, Confidence, Character and Connection enhanced – regardless of the course they have engaged with.
The 4 C’s In Terms of Student Mental Health
The ability to recognise the skills needed to achieve success in any given environment. Those displaying competence will be able to assess current strengths and areas of improvement, set appropriate goals, solve problems and work independently. At Leaders of Evolution, we believe that competence allows students to evaluate their own abilities and acknowledge any problem areas. Competence in terms of student mental health is one who is able to recognise their abilities and potential while being cognisant of their weaknesses.
One’s belief and trust in their abilities. Our Mental Health Program inspires students to be confident in themselves. At Leaders of Evolution, confidence relates to the development of positive self-worth and recognition that the learner can use the knowledge gained to influence themselves and others. This is the most important skill in terms of student mental health.
Relates to how the learner develops a sense of self-awareness and behaviours such as empathy, integrity and responsibility within the communities they apply their learning. The Mental Health Program we have put together at Leaders of Evolution ensures that students will achieve profound character growth. These newly learned behaviours will have an immensely positive effect on the students’ mental health.
At Leaders of Evolution, we define connectedness as how the learner is able to establish and foster positive relationships within the environments they apply their learning. Our Mental Health Program emphasises the importance of creating meaningful connections with one’s peers. This prepares students to better respond to their friends in times of need, as well as increase their own comfortability when discussing their struggles with mental health.
Leaders of Evolution is fiercely passionate about the importance of student mental health. We believe it is time to start normalising the implementation of a Mental Health Program in a school setting. It is so important that students feel seen through their struggles and know that they are not alone. We need to break down the taboo of talking about mental illness as it is just as real and ordinary as the common cold. The world would be a much different place if student mental health was taken as seriously as any other illness.
